Hello and welcome
to this module on how to develop Scrum
Master skills. After watching this video, you'll be able to, define desired levels of
project management knowledge and expertise required to transition to the
Scrum Master role, and summarize the
benefits of becoming a Scrum Master compared to a traditional project
management role. A Scrum Master requires
a certain amount of prior project
management knowledge to improve their
chances of success. Some Scrum Master skills can be acquired with past project
management experience. However, project
management skills, knowledge and expertise give a Scrum Master a
decided advantage. A Scrum Master needs to be an effective coach,
facilitator, issues manager, and a servant leader, you do not have to have project management experience
to develop these skills. However, time spent as a project manager makes it
easier to attain these skills. A Scrum Master needs to
be a great organizer, understand the
business environment and effectively interface
with customers. The product owner
is the voice of the customer and elicits
customer requirements. The product owner
is responsible for developing and managing
the product backlog. Customers share their
available budget and desired time-frames
for the launch. The Scrum Master, however, often interfaces
with customers to remove blockers and
share information. They must also foster good communication and
teamwork within the team. These skills can also be developed without being
a project manager. However, as stated earlier, time spent as a project manager allows you to develop
these skills. There are some project
management skills, however, that a Scrum Master should
possess to be successful. Key project management
skills such as requirements development,
project planning, and scheduling,
resource management, and risk management are
essential to success. Project scope management
skills are required to facilitate the development
of a sprint backlog. The development team
develops the sprint backlog, the Scrum Master ensures the accuracy of the
sprint backlog. Projects schedule
management skills are necessary to manage the sprint and ensure all tasks are planned
and completed on time. Project quality management
skills are necessary to ensure inspection and
adaptation needs are met. Project resource
management skills allow the Scrum Master to ensure everyone is contributing to achieve the
overall goal of done. Project communication
skills are essential to ensure transparent and
effective communications. Scrum advocates osmotic
communications. The term was coined by
Alistair Cock-burn, one of the signers of
the Agile manifesto. ''Osmotic communication
means the information flows into
the background hearing of the team members so
that they pick up relevant information as
through by osmosis." The Scrum Master ensures
that the environment is conducive to osmotic
communications. Project risk management skills
are necessary to ensure risk is factored into user
story point estimates. As a review, a story point is a measure of
the complexity of a user story that determines the amount of time and effort
needed to complete it. A user story with
a story points up eight will take more effort and is more complex
than a user story scored at five story points. In addition, a Scrum
Master will likely need to work with
project managers as many projects are
hybrids that both use Scrum and traditional
project management methods. In such cases, some preliminary project
management training and experience will allow the Scrum Master to be
effective in that role. The traditional project
manager role is rewarding and beneficial
in many ways. You are able to turn
great ideas into reality and help move the
organization forward. However, more and more
traditional project managers are transitioning into adaptive or Scrum
related positions, such as product owner
and Scrum Master. Let's understand
what the benefits are of becoming a Scrum Master. The project management
environment is becoming more complex. The need for new innovative
products delivered quickly to an increasing
demanding market is growing. There is a significant shift

salary is very competitive. Most people agree that salary and job opportunities
are important, however, being a Scrum Master is not all about the money. The Scrum Master role can be highly rewarding in
many other ways. Scrum Masters assume
a servant leader role and help other people
achieve success, this is hugely rewarding
in and of itself. They also help
organizations adapt to changing business
conditions and flourish. Scrum Masters with success
stories behind them will remain much in demand
